PRESS RELEASE
The Public Information and Press Relations Bureau within the Proesecutor’s Office attached to the High Court of Cassation and Justice is authorized to bring to the public knowledge the following:
Subsequently to the enhanced efforts regarding the fight against petty corruption and conflicts of interest, as priority areas assumed by the leadership of the Public Ministry there has been registered some progress in investigating this type of cases.
The statistics revealed that, in the period 01.01.2013 - 31.08.2013, there were solved 1460 cases dealing with corruption offenses, 193 indictments were issued, ordering the prosecution of 372 defendants.
Thus, the number of cases completed in the first half of 2013 increased by approximately 33 % compared to the same period in 2012, while the number of defendants prosecuted increased by 22.22 %.
In terms of quality of the people, there have been prosecuted forty six police officers, one noncom, two prison agents, one noncom from the gendarme detachment, three Romanian Road Transport Authority officials, five civil servants of the Driving Licenses Service ( SPCRPCIV ), five village mayors, one tax advisor, one local councilor, fourteen other public officials, one labor inspector, two foresters, one forest engineer, six professors, twenty seven doctors, sixteen nurses, one (hospital) sister, one coroner, one stretcher, one ambulance driver, one manager of the ambulance, two bank officials, twenty nine clerks, one legal expert, one journalist, eight driving instructors, one priest.
During the indicated period 118 became final sentences in the cases dealing with crimes of corruption, ordering the conviction of 158 defendants and the acquittal of 3 defendants, of which one under Article 181 of the Criminal Code.
Regarding the prosecution in cases of conflict of interests nationally were solved 238 cases, 17 indictments were issued, ordering the indictment of 19 defendants - three MPs, six mayors, one vice mayor, two local councilors, one inspector in the Public Procurement Department, three members of the assessment committee for the disabled persons, one public official from the Romanian Automobile Register, one executive of the county Public Health Directorate, one administrative hospital director.
With regards to committing the offence of conflicts of interest in the matter of public procurement, there have been prepared seven indictments and it has been ordered the prosecution of nine defendants (four mayors, two city councilors, one deputy mayor, one hospital director, one inspector in the Public Procurement Department of the City Hall) .
