PRESS RELEASE

The Public Information and Press Relations Bureau within the Prosecutor’s Office attached to the High Court of Cassation and Justice is authorized to bring to public knowledge the following:

In the case known in the media as “referendum frauds”, prosecutors from the Criminal Investigation and Criminalistics Section within the Prosecutor’s Office attached to the High Court of Cassation and Justice continued the investigations against some of the members of the election commissions in the Mehedinți County suspected of having committed the offence provided by Article 55 of the Law No. 3 of 2000.

So far, the evidence produced in this case has revealed several irregularities committed in this county, as follows:

-                             Registration of several voters having the same personal identification number or the same identity card, or bearing the same name;

-                             In several cases, the personal identification number was not filled in or the number filled in was invalid or inexistent;

-                             The identification data on the voters’ identity cards  were not filled in;

Also, the investigations carried out since August 20, 2012 have revealed that the percentage of irregularities is significantly high in the polling stations in the Mehedinți County.

1. Dumitru MIREA, in the capacity of president of the polling station in Gârla Mare, ordered that a supplementary voters’ list providing false information be drawn up (several persons were registered several times on this supplementary list), in order to introduce additional voting bulletins into the ballot box.

2. Liviu Cătălin BONDOC, in the capacity of president of the polling station in Drobeta Turnu Severin, signed a supplementary voters’ list containing false information, in order to introduce additional voting bulletins in the ballot box.

The evidence showed that the supplementary voters’ list of this polling station contained a very large number of voters from three communes, the voters being listed on this supplementary list in the same order as on the permanent voters’ lists in their home localities.

3. Gheorghița BURCU, in the capacity of president of the polling station in Orșova, forged page 11 of the supplementary voters’ list copying all the identification information concerning the voters listed on page 3 of the same list, changing the order and forging the signatures of the respective individuals, then cancelled 15 voting bulletins corresponding to the individuals mentioned on page 11 by stamping them twice, in order to validate the presence of the 15 persons, all these actions being performed after the voting process had ended.

The persons heard up to now have contested the signatures attributed to them on the said supplementary voters’ lists.

We will keep the public informed on the progress of the investigations.
